Car repair bills: how to avoid paying for work you don't need

What to ask before a repair, how to read an itemised bill, and how to deal with extra work found along the way.

Before you agree

  • Ask for the problem to be found first, and for a written or messaged estimate with parts and labour listed separately.
  • Ask whether each part is new, used or a local copy, and which make. These can cost very different amounts and last for different times.
  • Agree that nothing will be added without a phone call to you first.

Urgent or can wait?

When a mechanic lists many jobs, ask which ones are for safety now (brakes, steering, tyres, leaks) and which can wait or are optional (cosmetic fixes, extra flushes, add-ons). Compare with your manual's service list. It is reasonable to do the safety work now and think about the rest, or get a second opinion for an expensive job.

When you collect the car

Prices change with the car model, the part and the city, so we do not give fixed figures here.

  • Ask for the old parts back and look at them.
  • Check the bill against the estimate. Anything extra should be something you agreed to.
  • Take a short test drive. Check that the problem is gone and that no new warning light or noise has appeared.
  • Keep the bill. If you were promised a warranty on the repair, make sure it is written on it.
